Roman Marble Head of Silenus

An ancient Roman marble head of Silenus, bald with horse ears, prominent brow and beard of thick curls; a grapevine garland around his head.
Ca. 1st-2nd century A.D.
H: 13 in. (33 cm).
Ex North Carolina private collection, inventory number 8550.
Silenus was a semi-divine follower of Dionysus, usually depicted as bald and fat with a squat nose. He was the oldest and wisest of the God of Wine’s retinue. He was usually drunk and had to be supported by satyrs or carried on a donkey.
